The MACFO Pads Project is a crucial initiative under our Community Development Programme, designed to address the menstrual hygiene needs of girls and women in rural Uganda. In many communities, lack of access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products keeps girls out of school and affects the health and dignity of women. The MACFO Pads Project provides reusable sanitary pads, along with education on menstrual hygiene, to ensure that no girl misses out on education or life opportunities due to menstruation.
Objectives:
- To provide reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls and women in rural areas, ensuring they can manage their menstruation with dignity and comfort.
- To raise awareness and educate communities about menstrual health, breaking the stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.
- To reduce school absenteeism among girls due to lack of menstrual products, thereby improving their academic performance and opportunities.
- To empower women and girls by giving them the tools and knowledge to manage their menstruation, leading to better health outcomes and increased confidence.
Key Activities:
- Production and Distribution of Reusable Pads: The MACFO Pads Project focuses on the production of high-quality, reusable sanitary pads that are affordable, durable, and eco-friendly. These pads are distributed to schoolgirls and women in rural communities, providing them with a sustainable solution to manage their menstruation. The project also includes training sessions on how to use and care for the pads, ensuring they are used effectively and last longer.
- Menstrual Hygiene Education: Education is a key component of the MACFO Pads Project. We conduct workshops and awareness campaigns in schools and communities to educate girls, boys, women, and men about menstrual hygiene. These sessions aim to break the cultural stigmas associated with menstruation, promote understanding, and encourage open conversations about menstrual health. By educating entire communities, we create an environment where girls can manage their menstruation without shame or fear.
- School Support and Engagement: To further support girls’ education, the MACFO Pads Project partners with schools to ensure that they are equipped to handle menstrual health needs. This includes providing schools with emergency menstrual supplies, training teachers on menstrual hygiene education, and creating safe, private spaces for girls to manage their menstruation at school. By addressing these practical needs, we help reduce absenteeism and keep girls in school.
Impact
The MACFO Pads Project has already made a significant impact on the lives of many girls and women. Thousands of reusable pads have been distributed, allowing girls to attend school consistently and focus on their education without the worry of menstruation-related challenges. Our menstrual hygiene education efforts have reached entire communities, helping to break down the stigma surrounding menstruation and promote a more supportive environment for girls and women. The project has not only improved health outcomes but also empowered girls to pursue their education and dreams with confidence.
